Sweat Reduction With Botox® for Hyperhidrosis
For individuals who experience excessive sweating that is not related to heat or physical activity, Botox hyperhidrosis treatment offers a non-surgical option to help reduce sweat production in targeted areas. Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition where sweat glands activate more often than required for temperature regulation. Treatment plans vary based on the area involved, the extent of sweating, and individual physiology.
Understanding Hyperhidrosis
Individuals with hyperhidrosis may experience moisture unrelated to temperature, stress, or activity. Topical antiperspirants may not always provide sufficient support, which is why non-surgical sweat-reduction treatments such as Botox may be considered.
The excess sweat becomes present without engaging in tasks that require physical movement or muscular effort, and it doesn’t depend on the exposure to heat. Hyperhidrosis involves sweating that exceeds the body’s natural cooling needs. It can be localized or generalized and may affect:
- Underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis)
- Palms (palmar hyperhidrosis)
- Soles
- Face and scalp
- Back, chest, and other regions

How Botox Helps Reduce Excessive Sweating
Botox temporarily affects the nerve signals that trigger sweat gland activity. When placed just beneath the skin’s surface, the product can help reduce sweat production within the treated area. Studies have shown that Botox can successfully treat sweaty palms in 80 – 90% of cases.
Botox is approved by Health Canada for axillary hyperhidrosis (underarms). Medical teams may also use it for other areas such as the palms, soles, and face under off-label use where clinically appropriate. Individual timelines vary based on anatomy, the area treated, and lifestyle factors.
This treatment can help with:
- Reduced sweat production in targeted regions
- More comfortable daily routines
- Non-surgical sweat reduction
- Support for both primary and secondary hyperhidrosis patterns
- A treatment duration that may last several months depending on the area
Hyperhidrosis Treatment Areas
Hyperhidrosis can be classified as generalized or localized depending on the body part affected. It can also be classified by onset, either congenital (present at birth) or acquired (beginning later in life). Currently, the treatment of Hyperhidrosis through Botox injections has been approved by Health Canada and the FDA for the underarm area. Medical practitioners have also been using Botox “off-label” to treat other areas of the body susceptible to Hyperhidrosis. Many studies have outlined the effectiveness of this treatment to help those experiencing an excess of sweat.
Primary
Primary Hyperhidrosis is categorized by the areas that have the highest number of sweat glands. These areas include the hands, feet, armpits, groin and face. When the excess sweat is in a localized area i.e. palms, soles, face, underarms or scalp, it is referred to as primary hyperhidrosis.
Generalized
Excessive sweating involving the whole body is termed generalized hyperhidrosis or secondary hyperhidrosis. It is usually the result of another underlying health condition.
